Full Scale Advanced Oxidation Processes for Water Reclamation

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

For many commercial and industrial operations, looking at ways to reduce water and wastewater monthly bill costs, water reclaim is essential. A major water treatment challenge encountered in the search for new water sources is the reduction of total organic carbon (TOC) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) at one or more locations.

Properly designed advanced oxidation processes have demonstrated successful removal of a wide range of harmful organic contaminants, hard COD and TOC, while also exhibiting exceptional disinfection properties.

Advanced oxidation produces hydroxyl radicals that effectively attack and break down difficult organic compounds, COD and TOC. Although advanced oxidation has been used in some industrial and municipal applications for years, it has not been refined enough to cost effectively meet the industry requirements in terms of TOC reduction for water reclaim purposes.

Extensive pilot trials helped ESCO International design innovative advanced oxidation system for challenging applications such as TOC reduction which were previously thought to be unworkable and uneconomical.

ESCO International introduces a new commercial advanced oxidation system for TOC and non-biodegradable COD, a cost-effective technique in solving many environmental problems and one of the most promising technologies to ensure compliance with both current and future regulations.

ESCO International was selected by a major water treatment company to design and supply a full scale advanced oxidation system for a semiconductor water reclaim application.

ESCO International installed and successfully tested its high performance advanced oxidation system, for the treatment of 300 m3/h of contaminated process water containing up of 20 ppmC of TOC.

During the process of the AOP plant commissioning and start-up, optimisation of the process operating parameters was necessary. Accurate adjustments were successfully carried out and the required TOC reduction target of 75% was met.  Higher TOC reduction can be achieved by properly fine-tuning the operating conditions of the process. TOC reduction site results are shown in the figure below.

Subsequently, the company can now save up to 2.6 million m3 of water per year and reduce their monthly costs for water coming to their plant and water exiting.

As a result, ESCO International was again selected by another major water treatment company for the design and supply of their new AOP process to treat 600 m3/h of city water for TOC reduction.
The AOP plant was designed to reduce TOC from 8 ppmC to below 1 ppm.
The full scale system was supplied and construction was performed by a local engineering company.
The end user can save up to 5.2 million m3 of water per year, hence reducing the water and wastewater fees charged by the local municipality.

The new AOP design effectively removes challenging refractory organic compounds such as DMSO, TMAH, NMP, IPA, THMs, Urea found in treated water and process water used in semiconductor applications as well as Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), Taste & Odour compounds found in drinking water supplies and generating great concern among regulatory agencies and the general public.

ESCO International provides outstanding advanced water treatment solutions delivered through engineering excellence and innovation.
